alkali, and alkaline-earth metals, tend to be good reducing agents, as their valence electrons, whose radial orbit DEFINES the atomic radius, tend to be readily oxidized. On the other hand, the larger elements, i.e. The atomic radius of a chemical element Oxygen Nitrogen Carbon. nitrogen, fluorine, oxygen, TEND to be very powerful oxidants, and this is also manifested by their small atomic size. The general trend is that atomic sizes increase as one moves downwards in the Periodic Table of the Elements, as electrons fill outer electron shells. Atomic Radius - trends on periodic table Generally, the atomic radius decreases across a period from left to right and increases down a given group. Periodic trends of atomic radius, relative sizes of element atoms, vector diagram, atomic. Excluding the Noble Gases, the smaller atoms from the right hand side, i.e. It follows that the SMALLEST atoms derive the right of the Table as we face it. Of course, the diagram shows NO data (it should do so), but the relative size of the atoms across the Period, and down the Group is clear. And the best metric that illustrates this trend is the well-known diminution of atomic radii across the Period from left to right? And of course, we should look at some data. Going down the group, the first ionisation. Within a period, protons are added to the nucleus as electrons are being added to the same principal energy level. There are some small exceptions, such as the oxygen radius being slightly greater than the nitrogen radius. The atomic radius increases as you move down a column because for every new row of the table a new electron shell is added to the atom. The atomic radius of atoms generally decreases from left to right across a period. The atomic radius for atoms of an element tends to go up as you move down a group of elements in the table. Now it is a fact that the nuclear charge is SHIELDED very poorly by incomplete electronic shells. Progressing down group 2, the atomic radius increases due to the extra shell of electrons for each element. While the atomic radius can be defined in a number of different ways, the general atomic radius trend across the periodic table holds true. The chemistry and atomic structure of the elements is a contest between (i) nuclear charge, conveniently represented by #Z_"the atomic number"#, and (ii) shielding by other electrons. #"Increase in atomic radii down a Group, a column of the Periodic"#"Table."#

What is most important in the correlation between the duration of a REM sleep episode and the inter-REM interval is essentially the duration of the inter-REM interval itself, not the relative proportions of its NREM and/or Wake content. From this point on, “inter-REM interval” will always refer to immediately consecutive REM sleep intervals.Īfter interventions combining total sleep deprivation and REM sleep deprivation ( Ocampo-Garcés et al., 2000), and total sleep deprivation ( Franken, 2002), we have understood that although a short-term NREM sleep-dependent regulation of REM sleep cannot be ruled out (NREM Renewal theories, see Benington and Heller, 1994), REM sleep pressure accumulates mainly in a long-term process. The main correlation (between REM sleep and the consecutive inter-REM interval) was thus confirmed by the majority of reports on multiphasic sleepers, but the balance is more uneven in monophasic humans. In humans, no clear general trend was observed with either previous or consecutive episodes ( Le Bon and Linkowski, 2013), while a positive correlation was found in rodents between REM sleep duration and the spectral power of subsequent NREM episodes ( Hayashi et al., 2015). However, some studies have also found correlations between REM sleep episodes and previous NREM episodes, or a mixture of the two, in rats ( Vivaldi et al., 1994 Franken, 2002), cats ( Ursin, 1970), and humans ( Hartmann, 1966 Barbato and Wehr, 1998).Ĭomparisons between the duration of REM sleep episodes and the spectral power of NREM episodes have also produced contrasting results. These findings in rats have been confirmed in other mammals: cats ( Ursin, 1970), monkeys ( Weitzman et al., 1965 Kripke et al., 1968), mice ( Le Bon et al., 2007 Weber et al., 2018), and humans ( Barbato and Wehr, 1998). The duration of a REM sleep episode is related to the duration of the immediately consecutive inter-REM interval ( Vivaldi et al., 1994), and its NREM content ( Benington and Heller, 1994). With the exception of the Energy Allocation theory, which focuses on resource optimization ( Schmidt, 2014), all credible hypotheses on the NREM-REM cycle are currently based on a correlation that was established separately by two research teams in 1994 ( Benington and Heller, 1994 Vivaldi et al., 1994). Rationale Correlations Between REM and Immediately Consecutive Intervals vs. In a recent article, I discussed these theories and presented their respective advantages and disadvantages ( Le Bon, 2020). Rodents may exhibit 100–250 cycles per 24 h. Several theories are competing to explain this relationship within what is commonly referred to as a “NREM-REM sleep cycle,” or “ultradian sleep cycle.” Humans have between 2 and 8 such cycles during the course of a night and the most common pattern is 4–5 cycles of about 90 min (see Le Bon et al., 2019, for more on this distribution). Despite intensive research, the functional relationship between REM and NREM remains a matter of great conjecture. Since the discovery of rapid eye movement sleep (REM) by Aserinsky and Kleitman (1953), we know that sleep is composed of two distinct neurophysiological states: rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM). I will explain why I think this hypothesis also calls into question the notion of NREM-REM sleep cycles. After the PRRP, all three options are available again (NREM, REM, and Wake). A new “asymmetrical” hypothesis is presented here, where REM sleep episodes only determine the duration of a proportional post-REM refractory period (PRRP), during which REM sleep is forbidden and the only remaining options are isolated NREM episodes or waking. However, the high variability of inter-REM intervals, especially in polyphasic sleep, argues against a simple oscillator model. The hypothesis of short-term REM sleep homeostasis, which is currently the basis of most credible theories on sleep regulation, is built upon a positive correlation between the duration of a REM sleep episode and the duration of the interval until the next REM sleep episode (inter-REM interval): the duration of REM sleep would therefore predict the duration of this interval. Since the discovery of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep ( Aserinsky and Kleitman, 1953), sleep has been described as a succession of cycles of non-REM (NREM) and REM sleep episodes. I also don’t like how tedious it is to get things I would really love to have without spending money. I do love how that cats just take off in a full blown sprint over nothing like real cats do. That being said, I’m still having tons of fun! I don’t love all the breeds and cats that are available. I’ve been playing since the very end of December maybe? It’s been a good distraction from my dog’s passing. Totally not what the game was offering, sadly. Just one giant island full of black kitties dressed in spooky outfits. I thought maybe I could unlock or create all the little black cats. I originally downloaded this after seeing an ad for a little black Kitty in a Halloween costume. If you’re looking for a relaxing, fun game that will make you smile, this is perfect for you. I just thought it would be fun to be able to modify the current Turkish Angora to look more like her. She was white, but had a gray tail and a gray spot that covered one ear and one eye. For example, I used to have a beautiful Turkish Angora named Emma. But there are a few cats I’ve known that aren’t portrayed in the currently available color patterns. I’ve found some cats in the game that look like ones I’ve owned or that friends have owned, and I’ve started naming them after those cats. If I could have one wish for future versions of the game, it would be having the ability to “build” our own cat character, like you can create a specific Sims character. (Ok, in the game they don’t go quite all the way, they more lick at their leg, but you know how cats are!) The only major behavior I haven’t seen yet is a cat knocking something off a table or shelf. They do all the things real cats do, from getting the zoomies, to chasing grasshoppers, to arching and swatting and hissing at new cats, to hacking up hairballs, to licking their - bits. I expected to enjoy this game, because I’m a cat lover, but I didn’t expect to love it so much! What is winning me over is how charming and realistic the cats’ personalities are. Two years in, we wanted to add a layer of collaboration and workflow (think Google Docs + Trello for video). We were a small team and manipulating the DOM or managing state in individual functions got the job done. The first version of our web app was built in 2015 with vanilla JavaScript and a patchwork of utility and UI libraries. Microsoft Azure supports your workload with abundant choices, whether you're working on a Java app, app server, or framework. Let us dive in! Our journey with React Life before React As with any tool, React is not magic and should be used thoughtfully to get the best results.īelow are some of the things we learned that should help those considering a move to React and those who are seeing their React app straining and grunting. Ultimately, we had to balance new feature development and building things the right way with React. However, we soon hit a performance wall as we ported more of our product to use React. Our experience with React was love at first sight, and we got quick engineering wins with React. We cycled through multiple technology stacks as our company pivoted from a gaming app in 2015 to a slideshow creator in 2016 to a rich video platform since mid-2016. We are recent React converts at Rocketium. Today there are tens of thousands of packages around React in the NPM repository. Many libraries and npm modules were built around React to make development easier. Existing libraries like Angular, Dojo and Ember updated their rendering libraries to optimize how DOM updates get handled, each coming up with their own way to optimize rendering performance. Several UI libraries like Vue.js and Preact.js were started after React. Since its introduction 6 years ago, React has changed the way we build web apps. It’s worth noting that you should install the app on your iPhone or iPad first and see if it can print directly to the printer without the desktop app. The smartphone/tablet app is definitely the most professional and polished app out there and it has a lot of features, so if you do some serious printing and need to change printer settings a lot, this might be your best option. It works just like the other programs mentioned above in the sense that you need to have the desktop app running at all times in order for print jobs to go through. The app is $7 in the App Store and the desktop app is free. It’s a combination iPhone/iPad app and desktop program that runs on Mac or Windows. One last option that I should mention is Printer Pro by Readdle. Both programs worked very well in my tests, so I don’t really see any reason to spend $20 when you can get HandyPrint for $5. Printopia also has a Send to Mac printer, which is a convenient way to print a document directly to your computer. Printopia is pretty much exactly the same literally in terms of appearance and functionality. You’ll also need to make sure that the toggle button is set to On.įrom your iPhone or iPad, you’ll now see all HandyPrint printers listed under Other Printers. When you run the program, it’ll detect your printer and show it in the list. Once you download HandyPrint, run the DMG file and then drag the icon onto the Applications folder in order to install it. The PRO version can run even when a user is not logged into the Mac. Printopia is $19.99, but HandyPrint has a PRO version that requires a $20 donation. So basically, you can purchase HandyPrint for $5. HandyPrint requires a donation in order to activate the license and the minimum amount is $5. Mac AirPrintįor Mac users, there are two programs I recommend: HandyPrint and Printopia. Check out this guide to install AirPrintActivator and see if it works for you. There is one other option for Windows which requires a bit more technical setup, but is completely free. You’ll also see it has the name of the computer under the printer name. Now when you go to print from your iPhone or iPad and you tap on Select Printer, you should see all the O’Print printers listed under Other Printers. You can click on the Edit button (paper with pen icon) to change the name of the printer if you like. Once the printer is added, go back to O’Print and it should show up in the list.Īt this point, you really don’t have to do anything else unless your printer uses a different port than the standard port. If you do not see any printers in the list, it means you have to go to System Preferences – Printer & Scanners and add the printer to OS X first. Once you download and install the software, the main interface of the program will show you all the printers installed on your system. Overall, I found the program’s interface to be a little outdated, but the functionality was excellent. You can download a free 30-day trial to make sure that it works properly with your printer and system. Windows AirPrintįor Windows machines, the most popular program is O’Print, which costs $19.80. In addition, I’ll talk about some hardware you can buy that will also act as a print server. I’m going to mention several programs, some for Mac and some for Windows. With that out of the way, let’s get into the details. It’s worth considering bypassing all of this trouble and simply buying a new AirPrint-enabled printer as they are pretty cheap these days. Lastly, you’ll have to spend some money as these third-party apps are not free. The third-party software basically acts as a proxy and all the print jobs go to the computer first and then are passed on to the actual printer. Secondly, in order to print from your Apple device to your non-AirPrint printer, you’ll need to keep the computer on at all times. It doesn’t matter if the printer is attached locally to the machine or if it is a wireless/network printer, it just needs to be installed on the machine. Firstly, you need to have the printer already installed and working on at least one computer. Before we get into the details, let’s talk about the requirements for this to work. Tell her to weave it in a sycamore wood lane. Take Scarborough Fair, where we understand from the second stanza onwards that each round is going to be built on a different message from the protagonist to his lover: Have her make me a cambric shirt. Songs like these only work if you “get” how the lyrics are being put together structurally. So as we move through the chickens and ducks and cows and pigs, the lyrics become a kind of motor, providing the momentum and drive we need, carrying us forward.īut, there’s a trick here. Anticipation creates tension, which creates structure. What’s happening is that as you finish each round, there’s a sense of anticipation in moving onto the next. It’s a kind of formula, something like what you see in poetic forms such as limericks or Japanese Haiku. This opening and closing text serves as a container, bookending the “meat” of the content each time. Lyrically, each strophe starts and ends with exactly the same text, then between that we get the body of the words talking about the different animals and the sounds they make. That is, we can use the words not just for their meaning, but as a structural device.Ī simple example is a song like Old MacDonald – OK, a children’s song, but work with me here. So we need to look elsewhere for structure, and one place to do so is in the lyrics. But in strophic form, where we only have one repeated section and nothing to contrast it with, we don’t get that. In looking at song-building, something I’ve tried to bring out is how harmonic movement within and across sections of a song creates structure and form. In short, if you want longer strophic form songs, one way is to write lots of lyrics. The sheer volume of lyrics gives these songs a longer arc in the same way the text does with a poem or a novel. Similarly, the Simon and Garfunkel version of Scarborough Fair has 10 stanzas and is over 6 minutes long. And while there’s no version with all of these, plenty of them still get over 6 or 7 minutes. In its original form, Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah with its repeated Hallelujahs at the end of each strophe has 80+ stanzas. Desolation Row, with its 10 rounds of the basic 12 bar block (or 24 depending on how you count it), stretches out to a magnificent 11 minutes.ĭylan’s not alone. Strophic form or not, nearly all of his songs have lots of lyrics – which then take more time to get through. After all, he didn’t get the Nobel Prize for writing two verse and a chorus songs. To see this in action we need look no further than Dylan. If we’re looking to get more material into our song and with that more length, one approach is to use lots of words. There are different ways of achieving this. But with strophic form, where harmony doesn’t really provide much of a structural framework, lyrics can step into to fulfil this structural role. If you’ve poked around this site, you’ll see that the focus is almost entirely on form and structure and the role that harmonic movement plays in that. While this is something we can’t get away from, there are some workarounds. As we saw in the first part here on strophic form, the main limitation here is that because these songs just go round and round the same chord pattern, they can get very repetitive. |
